Odd Couple 17

McDermott thought seclusion would bring him secrecy. It just makes our job that much easier. No one sees us come in, we disturbed some groundcover on the way down, but we’re well hidden. It’s dark already.

We would be about a mile from the house, on the backside. That means I have about three quarters of a mile to get used to the dark, before we run into the dogs. Of course this is going to be less of a problem for you than for me, but I should be alright once I adjust. I’d kept the lights off almost the entire way here, to get used to darkness.

The straight razor is tucked into a loop in the harness, the rifle rides easily.

You’ll need to take care of the dogs, if they show up, while I kill the power. The sensors need to go down right away, the power at the house needs to be delayed, giving us a chance to get inside before the alarm goes up.

An armed sentry guards the power house. You make a move, intending to move out and kill him. Without words, I hold your arm, pulling you down beside me. I go about the ritual of finding the target, deep breath and exhale slowly, squeeze. In my minds eye, my target is dead before any of this happens, it’s a foregone conclusion. He goes down with the smallest of sounds. The rifle is silenced, of course.

We slip out, two shadows, to the power house. So far, no dogs. The sensors are easy to take care of, the house’s main power will be a little more difficult, the lines are deep. Position an explosive over the protected line. Pull a file cabinet over the charge to direct the blast down into the line. It will serve to muffle the sound somewhat. We’ll have twenty minutes to get into the house before the power blows.

Six charges left, we had already decided to blow the whole house. Leave the detonator at the ship. I take two, for the safe, leaving you the rest. I go to slip around the front, to kill the sentries at the front , when I hear the dogs.

“I’ll take care of it and plant the charges Ava, meet you at the front.”

A whisper, and you’re gone. I want to stay and help, but that’s not the plan. You’ll plant charges at structural points in the house, and we’ll detonate from the ship, when we leave. You’ve done beautiful work on them, and they’ll do the job.

We’ll slip in through an upper floor window, and move to the front of the house, presumably an office, where McDermott is sure to be staying.

Around the front, to shoot the sentries. The first goes down, and the second, falls to a crouch, makes a move for his radio, not his weapon, he’s been well trained. He dies before he can call for help.

I can’t think about where you are, I have to trust that you will be there, it’s too many to handle by myself, if there’s trouble, and I’ll never get out without you.

Up to the ledge below the second story windows, if there’s an assassins prayer, I offer it, and slip through the window, after breaking it. I’m hoping that speed will cover whatever noise I make.

The rifle rests against my back, it’s no good for close quarters. The straight razor glitters in the dark of the hallway, as I make my way towards the front of the house.
