Chapter 35
Central Hospital
Dr. Jacobs entered Luna’s room and closed the door at his back. He had in his hands the result of her pregnancy test in an envelope, closed and sealed just as Vin and Luna had asked. He had made sure that no names were written on it, just a code.
Luna’s medical profile was confidential information, like any other patient’s profile, but Dr. Jacobs didn’t trust staff of the hospital. If someone wanted to get extra money, selling the info to the media nobody would be able to stop them. Of course, they would be fired and sued, but in any case, once it was out there, the damage would be already done.
Luna extended her hand as she rose to a sitting position on the bed. “Thank you, Dr. Jacobs.” She was still hoarse, but now her voice sounded like a soft whisper. He nodded, smiling slightly and then went serious.
“Luna, I think you should seriously consider my petition.” He said, looking at her. Luna chuckled sadly.
“I’m not going to sign it, doctor. I’ve already got enough trouble, but thanks for your concern.” She replied as she made herself comfortable on the bed. Dr. Jacobs shook his head, sighing hard.
“Dr. Roberto Morales is one of the most prestigious cardiologists around, Luna. He can run specific tests that will confirm or deny my suspicious about your heart.” He explained gently as he took her hand in his. “The last electrocardiogram shows that the frequency of your heartbeats is back to normal, but that doesn’t mean anything. You’re still running a serious risk here.” Luna frowned deeply, thinking about his words.
“I know him,” she mouthed, playing with the envelope between her fingers. Dr. Jacobs knit a brow, a questioning look on his face.
“Pardon me?” He replied. Luna took a deep breath and looked at him.
“I know Roberto Morales, Dr. Jacobs. We met a few months ago while on a trip to Santo Domingo with Vin.” She whispered, thinking about what would be Vin’s reaction as soon as she mentioned Val’s cousin after what happened back then.
Luna wasn’t sure by now if she was pushing her own luck, adding Roberto to the current picture. She felt good and considered that there was no point in running more tests. Anyhow, she could always find a cardiologist in the US; surely the country must be full of them.
“Well, that’s great. Then, tell me at least that you’re going to phone him.” Dr. Jacobs said, pulling Luna out of her thoughts.
“I’ll do it, ok?” She lied and Dr. Jacobs narrowed his eyes, but after a moment he nodded ‘yes’ and left the room.
Vin was walking through the hallway when he saw Dr. Jacobs leaving Luna’s room. As soon as the doctor noticed Vin’s presence, he lifted his head, smiling slightly.
They were talking for a few minutes about the result of the electrocardiogram and Dr. Jacobs begged Vin to try and convince Luna to phone Dr. Morales to run specific tests to detect any anomaly in her heart.
Vin tightened his jaw, feeling his blood boiling in his veins as soon as he heard about Roberto and Luna in the same sentence. But he managed to hide his sudden anger from Dr. Jacobs answering that he would do his best to convince her, but that at the end it would be Luna’s decision.
Vin knocked on the door and entered, closing the door at his back. “Morning, baby.” Vin said, grinning as he pulled his sun glasses off. He then looked at Luna. “Hey, they removed the IV!” Vin cheered and Luna nodded ‘yes’, looking down at the envelope.
Vin frowned and lifted her head gently, putting a knuckle under her chin. Luna’s eyes were sparkling with unshed tears that fell as soon as she blinked.
“Don’t cry, baby. You’ll be ok soon. I’ll take care of you, Luna.” He said, kissing her forehead
Luna held his gaze, tears spilling along her cheeks and swallowed hard. Her throat felt numb because the painkiller.
“I’m really sorry, Vin,” she whispered, swallowing hard. “This is all my fault and now maybe I’m…” He didn’t let her finish.
“Stop it,” Vin said, pressing a finger against her lips. “You don’t have to be sorry, ok?” He replied, stroking her wet cheeks as he cleaned her tears with his thumbs. Luna frowned, puzzled. “None of this is your fault, baby.” He whispered as he tucked a stray tuft behind her ear, stroking her cheek.
“I’ve got the result here.”
Vin swallowed hard and looked at the closed envelope like it was a bomb about to explode and in some way it was, at least for both of them.
“Did they seal it?” he asked, staring at it.
“Yeah”
“Ok, let’s read it.” Luna took a ragged breath and picked up the envelope, locking eyes with him.
“I told you once that if I was pregnant I’d tell you as soon as I found out myself, right?” Vin sighed hard, nodding ‘yes’ as his mind went back to that day. Luna swallowed hard again and cleared her throat. “Well, that time has came, Vin.” In response, he took one of her hands in his and squeezed gently.
“Listen, Luna…before you open it I want to tell you something, ok?” Luna nodded ‘yes’ slowly. Vin took a deep breath, clearing his own throat. “We are in this together and no matter what that piece of paper says, that’s not gonna change.” He murmured, kissing her lips softly. “You’re not alone, Luna. I’m here with you and I’m not going anywhere.” Then he tilted his head back a bit and held her gaze. “Luna, you know I love you, don’t you?” He asked, his eyes flickering to hers. Luna smiled a little and nodded ‘yes’.
She took a deep breath and with trembling hands, Luna broke the edge of the envelope and pulled out the paper. Vin felt his heart start to race and so did Luna’s because the monitor registered it. Blinking against her blurry vision, Luna read aloud.
“Positive.”

Val’s and Renee’s place
Renee took a seat at the kitchen table and lit up a cigarette. “I can’t believe it,” she whispered, taking a deep puff. “How are they going to deal with this now, Val?” Renee asked, blowing the smoke. Valentino turned around, leaning against the counter.
“Luna is a strong woman and Vin loves her, princesa.” He replied, locking eyes with her.
“Do you think Vin loves her that much?” She asked, flicking the ashes. Val frowned slightly.
“What do you mean, Renee?” he replied, narrowing his eyes. She took a new puff and stood.
“Well, it’s not like Vin has experience in relationships, Valentino.” Renee retorted, heading to the salon. “He’s used to dealing with chicks whose main concern is what they are going to wear and in which position Vin wants to fuck them.” She added, taking a seat on one of the couches. “And Luna is much more complicated than that.” Val rolled his eyes and followed her.
“That’s not true, baby. Maybe he has no experience in long term relationships and sure as hell he doesn’t know shit about women, but he’s a fast learner, he always has been.” He said, taking a seat in front of her. “Besides I’m sure he loves her, maybe even too much.” Renee knit a brow, puzzled. Val nodded ‘yes’. “I’ve never seen him like last night, Renee. In all my life since I’ve known him. He was scared to death and we’ve been talking this morning. Vin was really concerned and he tried to hide it from me, but while I was driving him back to his place, I’m almost sure he was crying.” Renee’s eyes widened.
“I know he loves Luna, but I can’t help but be worried about them.” She said as she stood, putting out her cigarette. “I know Vin, and when he wants something or someone, nobody can stop him, Val. And I’m not sure what he loves more, Luna or the control he has over her life.” Renee frowned lost in thought as she sat between Val’s legs and made herself comfortable on the big couch, closing her eyes.

Central Hospital
“Are both of you sure that this is what you want?” Dr. Jacobs asked Vin and Luna. They looked at each other and nodded ‘yes’. “Ok, then. I’ll arrange the paperwork personally.” He added and left the room.
Vin made himself comfortable at Luna’s side and encircling her shoulder, he pulled her to him. Luna closed her eyes and silent tears fell unrestrained. Vin tightened his hold on her and closed his eyes as well, letting out a heavy sigh.
“We’re going to make it through this, Luna. You and I together as one.” Vin said as he stroked her hair, soothing her while Luna continued crying silently. “You’re my girl and I’ll take care of you.” He whispered, kissing her hair. You’re mine, Luna, he added silently.
It was the best for both of them. Right now, their relationship wasn’t solid enough to assume the responsibility of having a baby, and even though they had never talked about it, neither Vin or Luna felt they had enough strength to deal with a pregnancy, her illness and their complicated relationship all at the same time.
If Luna had to be honest with herself, then she had to admit that she wasn’t ready to have a baby in her current mental state. She hated herself too much, and she suspected that it probably would have ended in a miscarriage. However that didn’t make her decision easier.
On the other hand, Vin knew that his current lifestyle didn’t leave room right now for a baby, not to mention the fact the he didn’t feel ready for that task.
When he was younger, Vin always wanted to have a family and, even though he gave up on that dream a long time ago, since Luna came to his life, the idea didn’t seem to an impossible situation anymore.
Unconsciously, Vin pulled Luna to him more, as he made a promise to himself. The woman who was crying now between his arms would someday be the mother of his kids, but not right now.
However, they decided they were going to keep the secret for themselves until the day they died, just as they had before. No point in telling their friends, again, it was no one’s business.
Vin was sure that they would be able to get over this unexpected event together. With no doubt about it Luna would be the only one from now on in his heart.
