A Possible Emmy In The Works?

Editors Note: The fist two episodes of the next half of SGU, “Space” and “Divided” were released to the press prior to this call. This article does contain a spoiler, but not one that is unexpected, and not the details of how it is implemented. So stop reading now if that is an issue.

As we return to the Destiny, the strife between the civilian and military crew members, forced to co-exist aboard the ancient star ship explodes. The first two entries in this second ten of the fledging entry into the Stargate Universe establish two facts unequivocally; one this is the best science fiction show currently in production for US television (and maybe the best drama also), and two, if there isn’t an Emmy in this for at least two of the cast members, then there is something wrong with that process. Ming-Na and Louis Ferreira (along with another actor) stand apart from the ensemble cast in these two episodes in scenes that explode the conflict and distrust between civilian and military control aboard the Destiny. This story line is done in a way relevant to real world politics, and that echoes the best sentiments of relevancy previously reserved for the network’s Battlestar Galactica, a show which once dealt with a similar theme. Watch these two as their relationship expands and explodes, or you are missing out on some of the best acting and character development of the year, maybe ever for the network. And you won’t believe what Camile Wray does to Col. Young, and will come to understand why, if he is the father figure of the crew, she needs a good spanking! (inside joke). Spoilers won’t be revealed here, other than to say that Rush isn’t really gone for long (but details can be found elsewhere on the internet) and that this show firmly establishes itself as what it is: the flagship series of the SyFy Channel.

Of course Yes!

Wired has a list of 24 concept albums ["Earth's Coolest Concept Albums, Decided By You"], with Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon walking away with the whole lot, not surprisingly. There were a few albums that I was nodding to but what really tickled me is that Yes, any album at all, was also chosen:

Yes (Pick an Album, Any Album)

“How’s about Yes? It never released anything that wasn’t a concept album. Following that, Rick Wakeman’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Jeff Wayne’s War of The World, etc.” –milvus

“Close to the Edge has been mentioned, but it’s just a concept side. The whole album is not a single concept work. However, Tales From Topographic Oceans might fit, though it’s an album that is pretty hard to get into.” –kirkmc

“Come on. Not a single post for Close to the Edge by Yes? The shame.” –rdurso

“Tales From Topographic Oceans, though it’s more of a concerto for guitar than just a concept album.” –JonPeltier

Stargate Universe: Fantastic new aliens!

MGM’s official Stargate site has up a fantastic new pic of the aliens the crew of the Destiny is supposed to encounter next. I’ve been really liking the alien species in the show so far. They’ve been alien, in the true sense of the word, rather than rubber masked humans, with human traits (and speaking English no less). Sentient sand. The water thingies. Then the great alien creatures from “Time“. These new aliens are CGI and look spooky as hell:

New Stargate Universe starts next Friday!

From io9 comes “A Spoiler Free Review Of The New SGU“, here’s some bits and pieces but be sure to go and read the whole thing!

They’re back!

Next Friday, Stargate Universe is back! And if you can’t wait a whole week, check out our spoiler-free review of the next episode. Can the series keep hitting the higher standards it set in the last episode?

What the hell happened to Young? gah!

Here is the official synopsis. Beyond that, I promise I won’t spoil anything besides what we already know… but if you don’t want to know anything at all, stop reading.

Young accidentally finds himself on board an alien vessel before quickly transporting back onto Destiny. When the expedition tries to get into contact with the aliens, they find themselves under attack.

Aliens!

But back to the part of the plot that we can reveal — the aliens. Thank god for aliens. I’m not going to reveal what kind of aliens, they are but I will say they’re in the trailer. Beyond that, I want you to be surprised, because they are awesome. We know SGU wrote and filmed all these episodes months ago, but it’s almost as if they listened to our mid-season complaints, and then delivered. It’s a big wide black world in space, and it’s about damn time some other creatures popped their heads in.

I will also say that this is the first time in the history of SGU that I’ve been thankful for the communication stones. I’m still pretty firmly on Team “Airlock The Stones,” but this episode utilized them in a different way that made me thankful they existed. I highly doubt this I will ever feel this way again, because I’m not sure what happened in this episode could be repeated again and maintain the interest, but the stones really stepped up this episode

And Rush,

Now the big question: is Rush back? What do you think? SGU would never get rid of such a valuable actor and character, but is he back on Destiny? You’ll have to wait and see.

Can’t Get No Respect

Stargate Universe ended with Young marooning the scientist Rush on a deserted (?) planet after Rush framed him for the murder of Spencer. In this video from MGM’s Stargate site, Robert Carlyle explains why Rush did it, that he doesn’t believe that Young is the right man for the job and that he has no respect for him. Watch the video…

Some of these are a prerequisite

Via Your Tango’s article “10 Traits Of Undateable Men We’d Still Date“. Wow. All I can say is that some people are really really picky. Like, stupidly picky. Weirdly picky. Of course, YT picks out 10 out of “Undateable“‘s 311 things that supposedly make men undateable, but still…wow. Here’s a few; I won’t list the whole ten:

1. Body piercings, multiple tattoos and faux hawks. Some of us have a soft spot for this look. Lip ring? Super-sexy. The bottom line? Spray tans are never* OK, but judging wardrobe/facial hair/body modification choices is incredibly subjective.

This one just baffles me. Tattoos are sexy. Maybe that’s just me. Then again, if it was just me there wouldn’t be so many tattooed people around so clearly somebody finds them sexy.

4. Playing Dungeons and Dragons and/or WoW. We thought that everyone had come to a sort of geek-is-chic consensus. Right…?

Um, gamer here. And there’s that Vin Diesel love I’ve got going on. Now there’s a sexy gamer. Dateable? Oh hell yeah!

5. Owning porn. While we don’t love staring at that Penthouse centerfold when we use his bathroom, we also don’t automatically think “perv” just because he enjoys porn. Sometimes, we enjoy porn, too!

Whistles innocently…if he doesn’t mind mine, I won’t mind his.

8. Having a stack of reading material next to the toilet. This is just one of the many items that caused this Love Buzzer to do a double take, gasp and exclaim, “But I do that, too!” Other items in this category: road rage and Renaissance Faires

*Scratches head in puzzlement*. Intelligence makes me all squishy inside so wouldn’t I want a guy that had a bunch of reading material in the bathroom? Road rage is a definite turn off and renaissance fairies? I don’t even want to ask…

What makes a guy undateable? How about being an inconsiderate douchebag? Sure, it’s a good old standby but there’s a reason why the classics are classics.
