::ODD COUPLE::
::ONE::
The waiting is always the hardest part.
You can prepare yourself for everything else, but there can be no preparation for hours spent, crouched in the cold, waiting for the perfect opportunity to kill a man.
I could have done so, easily, several times over the past few weeks.
If I was a mercenary, a thoughtless brute concerned with nothing more than increasing my already sizable bank account, I could have taken you at any number of opportunities.However, I dislike messy situations. It’s uncivilized.
In my often uncivilized trade, there must be a certain order to things. There is no need to leave dead bodies bloodied in the doorways of shops, displayed on the street for anyone to see. So I bide my time.
I am particularly annoyed that my employer has sought to show so little faith in my skill that he has sent mercenaries for you as well.It complicates matters.
These particular mercenaries cause me concern, and, I must say, I have begun to wonder which of you I should kill first.
I follow you with the scope, as you slip down the street, it’s just turned dusk, and, to my dismay, there are still people on the streets.
But, I have followed you so far, and will continue to follow you, until this is done.
In your favour, I have noticed that you do appear to be avoiding interacting with anyone you may run into on the street, is it because you do not wish to be recognized?
Or is it that you do not wish to involve more people in your flight than would otherwise be?
I can’t say the same for the mercenaries set on your tail.
I slip further down the roof, past a choke point, in the market place that is in the alley below me. An elderly woman with what appears to be her grand-daughter tend the stall, below.
I will never take a shot from such a place, I wouldn’t think of having a young child see such a thing, but I am duty bound to watch you.
You slip past the stall, averting your gaze from the child whose eyes have found you.
We appear to have an understanding, you and I, about how things should play out, although I would be amazed if you were aware of me.
A lot of men in your position, knowing they were being followed by so dangerous a group, may have sought a hostage. You did not.
The mercenaries do not appear to be so well schooled.
The larger of the four, a vicious brute, knocks the elderly woman’s wares to the ground, laughing.
The young child runs out, and is grabbed roughly, and begins to cry.
This is a despicable display, and I do believe I will have my employer pay for this.
In the midst of this, you came back, out of the shadows, and insisted the child be dropped, you, who would not take a hostage, the man I am to kill.
I watched you as you called for the young girl to close her eyes, and deftly threw a blade, forcing the mercenary to let her go.
I watched you as you picked her up, and as you hid her at the side of the alley.
I find myself becoming very curious about you indeed.
The other mercenaries have now encircled you.
It would seem that my wait will be over.
You looked genuinely surprised as the first mercenary falls, without a sound, a gunshot through the neck, the other three present about as much of a problem.
It’s messier than I would have liked, but I don’t see that I had much of a choice.
It’s a shame that I have had to show my hand, I would have enjoyed watching you a while longer.
As it is, you have seen me, something very few people can claim to have done and live to tell the tale.
I can only nod my head at you, you are an honourable man.
I will not shoot you today, Mr Riddick.
