Right to choose, but only what we say you can choose

Shorter version: Right wingers don’t believe a woman – especially a young woman – should have the right to make choices about her own body, but will take the opportunity (stress that – opportunity! because this certainly is opportunistic) to hop up on a soapbox to insist that the very same woman has a right to decide whether or not to stay in school. Gotcha. Also, I’m thinking that, after this woman has had a child (ie – satisfied the weird sperm-magic thing the right wing has going on) and, due to her lack of an education, requires welfare or any other help, then she’s shit out of luck.

Conservatives Defend Rights of Teenagers to Drop Out of School, Stay Pregnant

Jezebel/Erin Gloria Ryan/26 Jan 2012

During Monday night’s State of the Union address, President Obama proposed that every American be required to stay in school until they turn 18 or graduate. Now, Republicans, like a bunch of wingtip-wearing circa 1985 Beastie Boys, have leapt to fight for the right of teenagers to drop out of school. This is surprising coming from the party that advocates requiring teens who seek abortion to notify their parents and applauded a move to restrict the sale of Plan B to girls under 17. Should teenagers have rights of self-determination, or shouldn’t they? Make up your mind, guys!

Shitty New Bills Would Make Domestic Abuse More Difficult to Prosecute

Aside

Shitty New Bills Would Make Domestic Abuse More Difficult to Prosecute:

Today in terrible ideas: a new pair of bills proposed by New Hampshire Republicans would seek to put fresh red tape between police and their ability to arrest domestic abusers in the state. There’s no way this could possibly go wrong!

New Hampshire currently has some of the most liberal anti-domestic violence laws in the US, but the proposed legislation would undo many of the protections the law currently offers to victims of domestic violence.

House Bill 1608 would require the state to ease up on enforcing restraining orders issued against domestic abusers, requiring an abuser to violate the restraining order against him or her three times before he or she could be arrested again. The bill would remove a judge’s discretionary power in ordering the arrest of a perpetrator before three restraining order violations. According to law enforcement, this bill would also remove a judge’s ability to bar a domestic abuser from purchasing a gun, or to require the abuser to relinquish weapons. Awesome!

David Duchovny: ‘The X-Files made me a better actor’:
YoungAtHeart868David Duchovny has credited starring in The X-Files with helping him become a better actor.

Duchovny, who played Special Agent Mulder on the sci-fi series, commented that he learned a great deal during his nine years on The X-Files.

He explained: “Every day I had to go to work and every day for 14 hours year after year after year. I don’t know if I would’ve made it to this point if I would’ve just gone from movie to movie to movie like a three-month stint here and a three-month stint there.

“It was very good for me and my particular sense of myself or my craft to have to go in every day and do it.”

Baby Hemlock Throw [Hemlock2]

UPDATE 1 below

hemlock2

Just started a baby hemlock ring blanket today and I’m 20 rows in. The middle is always the hardest and this one is especially so, being so small. I’m using baby wool in white, obviously, on a 2.75 mm circular needle. This is the second hemlock ring for me, but it’s the first using such fine wool. I added the tape measure, to display just how small that center circle is. I’m going to have to add quite a few feather and fan rows, once I get there, but I’m really excited to see this when it’s done!

UPDATE 1:

The inner flower ring is complete, now onto the feather and fan section!

Special note: left in the Orange Woogly Thing, for reference :D

A group of active duty soldiers in Bagram, Afghanistan recently released their own contribution to the “It Gets Better” video series, sending a message of tolerance to gay and bisexual teens hounded by bullies and their peers.

“It’s really hard, being accepted, to be different,” one soldier explains. “But it’s even harder to be somebody that you’re not. So, once you find that group of friends that embrace who you are, just go with the flow. It gets better.”

The video is an outreach effort by the group OutServe, an LGBT support organization for U.S. soldiers. It was published on Monday, Jan. 23, 2012.

We all know, I tend to shy away from award shows…

/smile

However, I can’t tell you how honored I am to be Nominated for an NAACP award, for the portrayal of Dom Toretto in Fast Five.

Haha… one to be proud of…

I am lucky to have such a great ensemble of actors, director, writer, producers… and even the studio. Film is truly a team effort, and everyone gave above and beyond.

P.s. Thank you NAACP for validating my work, and more importantly, validating all those who have believed in me.
