Zalman King directed erotic film 9½ Weeks:

Director Zalman King, best known for erotic film 9½ Weeks and television series Red Shoe Diaries, died on Friday in Santa Monica, Calif., after a long battle with cancer. He was 69.

“Zalman was an extraordinary man and artist, more complex and humane than those who knew him only from afar could possibly imagine,” said Allison Burnett, King’s son-in-law.

Actor Charlie Sheen paid a tribute to the late director on his Facebook page, saying “the world lost a brilliant and noble soul today.”

King started his career on screen in the 1960s, star-ring alongside James Caan and Walter Koenig in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, before going on to play a lawyer in television drama The Young Lawyers in the 70s.

He transitioned to working behind the cameras in the 1980s, using erotica as a central theme in his films. King wrote and produced 9½ Weeks, star-ring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke as two lovers embroiled in a sexually charged relationship.

Burnett recalled that director Stanley Kubrick consulted King every night when filming Eyes Wide Shut because “he wanted to learn how to shoot eroticism.”

King is survived by wife Patricia Louisianna Knop, a screenwriter, and daughters Chloe King and Gillian Lefkowitz.

Zalman King, Director and Producer, Dies at 69:

The man behind “9 1/2 Weeks” and “Red Shoe Diaries” passed away in Los Angeles.

Zalman King, who directed 1990’s Wild Orchid and produced 1986’s 9 ½ Weeks, died Feb. 3, a rep from Zalman King Productions confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 69 years old.

King, who was born Zalman Lefkovitz in Trenton, New Jersey, had bit parts in 1960s TV shows before segueing into directing and producing. His trademark was work with a strong, somewhat artistic, erotic content. His most successful films as a director were 1988’s Two Moon Junction and 1992’s Red Shoe Diaries, which went on to be a series on Showtime. His most recent credit was as the exec producer on Showtime’s Body Language.

Madame de Pompadour as the next companion?:
NUP_102225_0119.jpg

This may all just be Steven Moffat trolling the internet, but the Doctor Who showrunner tweeted that people should follow Sophia Myles’s Twitter feed, and that he would explain later. Myles, who played Madame de Pompadour in Moffat’s second series episode “The Girl in the Fireplace”, put out a couple cryptic tweets, but no further information is forthcoming. This has led to speculation – as it always does in Doctor Who fandom — that Myles might be the next companion, or at least she might appear in the next series. I’m a bit more skeptical, but honestly this one is pretty hard to read. [Zap2It]

Karen Gillan confirmed again that her departure from the role has already been decided, but that her final appearances will comprise “a few episodes… a few really good episodes.” [Hitfix]

Frank Darabont’s Amazing Walking Dead Episode That You’ll Never See:

YouTube Preview Image

walking_dead428x350 Wondering how the second half of Walking Dead season two will be different without Frank Darabont at the wheel? Here’s one brilliant storyline the ex-show runner had planned, which was straight out of the Twilight Zone. And sadly, it will probably never see the light of day.
***
[Darabont said to me], “Look, I think it would be really cool to tell a prequel story about how Atlanta fell. Do Black Hawk Down, but with zombies. And have a few main characters pass through, like a Twilight Zone episode [and] the lead will be you. And your character will go through and you’re a soldier and all these horrible things happen, the chain of command breaks down, and eventually you have to take out your superior officer to save a bunch of people. Then, eventually in the end, you get bit.”

And [Darabont is] pitching me this, “You’re crawling and you crawl into this tank and you have this grenade and you’re going to blow yourself up. But you set the grenade next to you and you die. Then, we reprise the scene from the pilot, where Rick crawls in the tank and there’s a zombie there.”

And if you look closely, I played that zombie because we were setting up this prequel we were going to do. If you watch the pilot of Walking Dead, that’s me in the tank as the zombie. And then Rick blasts him and he gets deafened, and he gets that grenade which saves him at the end of the season. Well, we were going to tell the history of the grenade. We were going to tell, also, how another character who is being introduced in the second season how he comes to a certain thing. They were going to do all this cool stuff. Not doing it now. Why? Because AMC wanted to save a few bucks. That’s just one example of the king of cool, awesome forethought that this guy put into the show that is now absolutely for naught.

“Hell on Wheels” tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a Confederate soldier (Anson Mount) who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to ‘Hell on Wheels,’ a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. It examines the railroad’s institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction. Over time, “Hell on Wheels” chronicles this potent turning point in our nation’s history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

“Hell on Wheels” stars Anson Mount (City by the Sea, Cook County) as Cullen Bohannon, a former soldier hell bent on avenging his wife’s death; Colm Meaney (Get Him to the Greek) as Thomas “Doc” Durant, a greedy entrepreneur taking full advantage of the changing times; musician/actor Common (Just Wright, Date Night) as Elam Ferguson, an emancipated slave working to achieve true freedom in a world entrenched in prejudice; Dominique McElligott (“The Philanthropist”) as Lily Bell, a newly widowed woman trying to survive in a man’s world; Tom Noonan (“Heat”) as Reverend Cole; Ben Esler (“The Pacific”) as Sean McGinnes and Philip Burke (“Law & Order,” “Mercy”) as Mickey McGinnes, two young brothers looking to find their fortune in the new West; and Eddie Spears (“Into the West”) as Joseph Black Moon, a Native American man torn between his culture and the changing world around him.

Shot on location in Alberta, Canada, the series is produced with assistance of the Government of Alberta, Alberta Film Development Program.

Endgame, Shattered, and Stargate Universe:

It’s almost enough to make me lose hope, all these fantastic shows being cancelled. Meanwhile, on the other side of the forest, utter crap reality shows are doing great. It only reaffirms that the vast majority of people are effing morons.

Vancouver TV productions get multiple Gemini nominations

The Vancouver-filmed mystery series Endgame, cancelled this past spring by the Showcase network after one season, earned a Gemini nomination for best dramatic series yesterday, along with several other nominations.

Katharine Isabelle, who played a sympathetic hotel bartender opposite series star Shawn Doyle, was nominated as best featured supporting actress, while guest star David Richmond-Peck was nominated for an Endgame episode. The show was also nominated for best cross-platform project for its online interactive site, and best opening titles.

The also-cancelled and also filmed in Vancouver crime series Shattered, which aired on Global starring Callum Keith Rennie as a traumatized cop, earned Rennie a best lead actor nomination and co-star Camille Sullivan a best lead actress nod. Kari Skogland was nominated for directing an episode.

The Vancouver produced sci-fi series Stargate Universe was nominated for best make-up and visual effects

The Geminis will be handed out at a televised ceremony Sept. 7 on CBC at 5 p.m. PT.

RIP: Randy Savage, The Transporter and The Machine[I read stuff]

Wherein I read things, laugh, and pass them on to you…

Macho Man Randy Savage Dies In Car Accident:

Macho Man Randy Savage — one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time — died today in a car accident in Tampa, Florida … TMZ has learned.

TMZ spoke with Randy’s brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM … and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.

Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase “Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh.” Savage was so popular, he became the spokesperson for Slim Jim in the mid ’90s … and became virtually synonymous with the brand.

UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ … Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median … through oncoming traffic … and “collided head-on with a tree.”

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

Savage’s wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision — but survived with “minor injuries.” She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

10 Greatest Handguns in All of Science Fiction and Fantasy [io9]

10 Greatest Handguns in All of Science Fiction and Fantasy:

10) Mal Reynolds’ Sidearm (Firefly)

We weren’t really sure whether to include this one, but it got by far the most votes in our Facebook poll. (There’s just something about Browncoats and polls.) And you have to admit, it is a gorgeous piece of ordnance. According to this super-detailed gun-related website, it’s an antique-styled weapon, but judging from the sound effect, it uses some unknown futuristic propellant. Like everything on Firefly, it’s retro but also futuristic.

9) Deckard’s hand-cannon (Blade Runner)

By all accounts this gun shoots explosive shells, meaning it makes quite a mess if Deckard decides he didn’t like your responses to those turtle questions. And it’s a big scary gun, with some rifle characteristics as well as bits of a basic .44. It’s got intimidation as well as blasting power.

8) The Lawgiver Mk II (Judge Dredd)
7) The Needler (The Stainless Steel Rat and Halo)

6) The Colt (Supernatural)

We have to give some props to a gun that can kill almost anything. It’s the ultimate magic gun! Made by gun-maker Samuel Colt (whom we met last week), this gun is enchanted with such powerful spells, it can kill even the most powerful demons and beasties. There’s only a few supernatural creatures whom the gun won’t work on… including one of the most important evildoers in the Supernatural mythos. Still, it’s a great plot device and an awesome object for your mystical gun fetishism.

5) Winona (Farscape)
4) The Noisy Cricket (Men In Black)
3) The DL-44 Heavy Blaster (Star Wars)
2) The Good Samaritan (Hellboy)
1) The mighty Phaser (Star Trek)
