Part of the reason I love Joss Whedon:

Heroines and fanfic [How to bring back Firefly in five terrible steps]: When one redditor complained that, during the San Diego Comic-Con Iron Man 2 panel, the only audience comments directed at Scarlett Johansson were “You’re hot,” Whedon responded:

All I can say is that Scarlett gets to do a lot more than be hot in “Avengers”. It’s definitely dispiriting to have a woman play an heroic role and then be reduced to body parts by fan commentary, but that can only change slowly. And is.

And when another asked for his opinion on fanfiction:

All worthy work is open to interpretations the author did not intend. Art isn’t your pet — it’s your kid. It grows up and talks back to you.

Prometheus footage reveals just why our heroes go in search of aliens: Ridley Scott screened some new footage in London this morning, which is said to feature several key expository scenes from the first thirty or so minutes of the film. Here’s how things kick off, according to The Telegraph, which explains just exactly what prompts the movie’s mission in the first place:

We start, from the look of things, with a discovery on the Isle of Skye, in the company of Rapace’s archaeologist, Dr Elizabeth Shaw, and a colleague played by Logan Marshall-Green. It’s a 35,000-year-old cave painting depicting a faraway solar system, including one habitable planet with a moon. Fast-forward to 2093, and these two awake from hypersleep on a 17-man exploratory space vessel, their mission to probe the secrets of LV-223 — which buffs will note is not LV-426, the dread-filled planet from Alien and Aliens.

There’s some disagreement on whether that date is actually 2093 or December 2091, although obviously that’s not too big a difference to worry about. Anyway, IGN describes what happens once people wake up:

The ship’s crew – which includes Shaw and her scientist-boyfriend Holloway – slowly wake from their space-slumber, and we are introduced to Vickers (Charlize Theron), the tough-talking company suit who is leading the expedition for reasons as-yet-unknown.
Vickers then plays a holographic film featuring Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce), the elderly boss of Weyland Corp., which has funded the mission. Weyland informs the crew that if they are watching the film he is by now dead, introduces them to the ship’s android David (Michael Fassbender) and tells the story of Prometheus, who stole fire from the gods and gave it to man, prompting our own evolution.

It’s also mentioned, in what I think you’d have to consider a rather telling character detail, that Charlize Theron’s character starts doing push-ups the second she wakes up from cryogenic sleep, whereas everyone else vomits quite a bit. There are more details at the links. [Telegraph and IGN]
Memento and L.A. Confidential star Guy Pearce says we won’t see any more viral videos featuring his character, business titan and robotics pioneer Sir Peter Weyland, but the other characters will be getting their pre-movie spotlights:

“You’ve seen everything you’re going to see out of [the TED Talk], but there were some sections of the speech that were trimmed out, just for economics. But there are other viral videos that are going to come out that involve the other characters from the film, with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. Mine was just the entrée to bigger and better things.”

He also gave this cryptic hint about his role in the film, which likely refers to the old age makeup implied in the description above:

“It was a difficult time as well, and I won’t explain why [without spoiling the film], but it was quite rigorous.”

[MTV Movies Blog]
Director Ridley Scott was again asked about what rating he hopes the film will get, and he answered with a lengthy rant about the MPAA ratings board and the economics of filmmaking. The upshot is you should probably expect this movie to be PG-13, since he makes it clear that he wants Prometheus to make money:

I want certification for this film that allows me to make as large a box office as possible…The studios wrestle constantly with these ridiculous adjustments to whether it’s PG13, PG15, R, double R and it does, to a certain extent, affect the box office, which is arithmetic, which is not a cash register, it’s how they get their money back and if studios don’t get their money back we don’t have any movies.
And so it is important that films are successful and I am fully supportive of that because I’m not just a director, I’m also not stupid. I’ve been in this business long enough and to a certain extent I’m a businessman. So when a big film fails it’s disastrous for all of us. When a big film wins it’s terrific for all of us, whether you like the film or not, it’s really cool. So the adjustment of the ratings… are inconsistent and ridiculously inconsistent, so I can start talking about films that have got PG13 this year, which are absolutely fucking ridiculous… is anyone in here from the MPA or whatever it is? …Get your house in order.

Ashley Judd Slaps Media in the Face for Speculation Over Her ‘Puffy’ Appearance: The Conversation about women’s bodies exists largely outside of us, while it is also directed at (and marketed to) us, and used to define and control us. The Conversation about women happens everywhere, publicly and privately. We are described and detailed, our faces and bodies analyzed and picked apart, our worth ascertained and ascribed based on the reduction of personhood to simple physical objectification. Our voices, our personhood, our potential, and our accomplishments are regularly minimized and muted.
…That women are joining in the ongoing disassembling of my appearance is salient. Patriarchy is not men. Patriarchy is a system in which both women and men participate. [emph mine] It privileges, inter alia, the interests of boys and men over the bodily integrity, autonomy, and dignity of girls and women. It is subtle, insidious, and never more dangerous than when women passionately deny that they themselves are engaging in it. This abnormal obsession with women’s faces and bodies has become so normal that we (I include myself at times—I absolutely fall for it still) have internalized patriarchy almost seamlessly. We are unable at times to identify ourselves as our own denigrating abusers, or as abusing other girls and women. [thedailybeast/Ashley Judd/9 Apr 2012]

Romney Camp Fumbles Equal Pay For Women Question: Mitt Romney’s campaign was asked during a press call this morning if Romney supported the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which assists women in working to get equal work for equal pay. This bill was the first legislation President Obama signed into law, and conservative Republicans of the sort that make up the GOP base have been agitating for its repeal ever since. The response: “We’ll get back to you.” Somebody on Team Romney realized that this wasn’t the best way to try and prove to women voters that the GOP really isn’t at war on them, so an hour later, they tried again, stating that Romney did after all back the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Of course, this might sound a little more convincing if the Republican female legislators Mitt’s using for human shields, Mary Bono Mack and Cathy McMorris, hadn’t both voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Act. It might also have helped a bit if Romney, when he was in Wisconsin cuddling up to the anti-woman Paul Ryan and his bad joke of a budget, had anything besides warm-and-fuzzy words for Scott Walker, who just signed the bill repealing the Wisconsin version of the Lilly Ledbetter Act. Mississippi Considers Banning Abortions 6 Weeks After Gestation, Even In Cases Where Women’s Health Is At Risk: Lawmakers in Mississippi have resurrected the so-called “heartbeat” bill, a measure which “equates abortion of a fetus with a detectable heartbeat to child homicide.” A physician who performs an abortion where a fetal heartbeat is present “could face the maximum 30 years” and some women would be required to undergo “a transvaginal ultrasound to determine whether a fetal heartbeat is present.”
Under the measure, pregnancies that result from “rape or incest or that would endanger the life of the mother” are exempt from the requirement, but those that would pose health risks are not [thinkprogress/Igor Volsky/11 Apr 2012]

Castle to Meet The Walking Dead: First Look!: Before we look ahead to the Castle season finale (which will feature a surprising return) or to Castle Season 5 (which will focus on some fun between our favorite investigative duo), this ABC hit will make like the biggest show on cable. That’s right, the April 30 installment of Castle (titled “Undead Again”) will bring out The Walking Dead, or so it’s believed by the only witness to the crime of a dead man found with bite marks on his body. It’s an older story, but it’s nice to see it in the news again. There are of course more recent heroic efforts, like bringing in relief supplies to Haiti via the Dominican Republic: Hollywood Heroes – Kate Winslet, Mark Harmon, Vin Diesel, Ryan Gosling and More Celebrities to the Rescue: Vin Diesel was riding down the Hollywood Freeway on a motorcycle in 2002 when a car in front of him got into an accident in which it rolled over and burst into flames. The “Fast and the Furious” and “XXX” star screeched to a halt behind it, as the incident was widely reported at the time, ran to the car and pulled the family’s children out of the back seat. After everyone was out, the automobile became completely engulfed in flames. [nationalledger/Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith/10 Apr 2012]

The War on Immigrant Women: Part of the Sweeping Crusade Against the Fundamental Rights of All Women: Araceli doesn’t go out alone anymore. She is frightened of ongoing harassment by local police, whom she used to trust to protect her. Trini drops her two children off at school every morning unsure if she will be there at pickup time. Other mothers in her communities have, after all, been “disappeared,” taken from their homes, and families, without warning or trace.
Think this is happening in Kabul? Juarez?
Actually, it’s happening in Alabama.
Today, the escalating “war on women” has — rightly — sparked widespread outrage and urgent action to protect women’s human rights in the United States. But the also-ongoing “war on immigrants” is not merely a coincidental crisis. Both are elements of a sweeping crusade against the fundamental rights of women living in the United States, documented and otherwise. [RHRealityCheck/Mallika Dutt/10 Apr 2012]

Teen Pregnancies Highest In States With Abstinence-Only Policies: Researchers at the University of Washington in Seattle found that teenagers who received some type of comprehensive sex education were 60 percent less likely to get pregnant or get someone else pregnant. And in 2007, a federal report showed that abstinence-only programs had “no impacts on rates of sexual abstinence.”
But 37 states require sex education that includes abstinence, 26 of which require that abstinence be stressed as the best method. Additionally, research shows that abstinence-only strategies could deter contraceptive use among teenagers, thus increasing their risk of unintended pregnancy.
For example, take the states with the highest and lowest teen pregnancy rates. Mississippi does not require sex education in schools, but when it is taught, abstinence-only education is the state standard. New Mexico, which has the second highest teen birth rate, does not require sex ed and has no requirements on what should be included when it is taught. New Hampshire, on the other hand, requires comprehensive sex education in schools that includes abstinence and information about condoms and contraception. The Dandelion Army, Crayons, and Sir Ben Kingsley [I read stuff]

Wherein I read things, laugh [or not], and pass them on to you…

When my little guy was a lot more little than he is now, he had a theory about the goings-on in the yard. Specifically, about the dandelions, which never seemed to go, no matter how hard we tried to get rid of them. They were in fact an army. The Dandelion Army.

The Lost Colors of Crayola: Crayola has been the standard for crayons, and at least partially responsible for bringing color naming to the mainstream for 126 years now. The crayons and color names have come a long way from the standard 8 color crayon box of black, blue, red, green, brown, yellow, violet, and orange. Over the years they’ve added plenty of new colors to their line of wax crayons but not all of those can still be found today. Some of those  colors have been discontinued or renamed, for various reasons, and since 1998 they’ve maintain a core collection of 120 colors, (check out our post ‘All 120 Crayon Names and Color Codes‘ here in the COLOURlovers blog to see them all and grab their digital code equivalents). Sir Ben Kingsley in Talks to Play Iron Man 3 Villain: Sir Ben Kingsley is in final negotiations to play the villain of Iron Man 3, but he apparently will not be playing the Mandarin. Don’t believe that just yet. With principal photography creeping up soon, new casting additions have to be completed even sooner and so two weeks ago came a casting call sheet revealing important information about returning characters joining Robert Downey Jr. We know Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson are all back from Iron Man 2, and they may just be joined by newcomer Ben Kingsley for the threequel. Variety has the scoop, reporting that Sir Ben Kingsley is in final negotiations to play “the villain” of Iron Man 3. Any movie fan familiar with Kingsley’s repertoire and of Iron Man’s history may immediately (and justifiably) picture the Mandarin as a good fit for the British actor, but the source specifically states that is not the case. Instead, Kingsley is apparently playing the man behind the “spread of a virus through nanobots,” adding more credence to the rumored Iron Man 3 plot reported by Latino Review - who’ve held a mighty impressive track record in their Marvel Studios scoops over the years. Their scoop had the Shane Black-Drew Pearce screenplay drawing its premise and inspiration from Warren Ellis’ critically acclaimed “Extremis” miniseries of the Iron Man comic books. Prometheus! Alien! And stuff I just wish was fictional [I read stuff]

Wherein I read things, laugh [or not], and pass them on to you…

A Stockpile of New PROMETHEUS Images Hits the Interwebs: It’s not all that often that an upcoming film pulls me in to the point that I get all giddy over the release of new images. Prometheus is one of those films. I’m beyond the point of needing the movie sold to me. I’m all in. If you’re anything like me, I invite you to join me in putting aside critical thought and reasonable expectations and just get super hyped over all of these (and these) new images from Prometheus. Alien: The Easter Edition: The crew of the USS Chocstromo really should have seen this coming.
Featuring John “Big John” Seaward from hit show The Inbetweeners.
Also featuring Come Dine With Me winner Patrick Fysh!
P.S. Any characters, scenes or events in the film “Alien: Easter Edition” that bear any resemblance to Ridley Scott’s “Alien” (1979) are entirely coincidental and unintended.
P.P.S. Prometheus looks really cool. [whycantihavespaces/6 Apr 2012]

Anti-Choice Medical Malpractice Shields Threaten to Permanently Alter Medical Care for Women: Among the new restrictions appearing in anti-abortion bills nationwide, it is the medical malpractice liability shields that have the potential to alter, perhaps permanently, women’s relationship with the civil justice system.
Both Kansas and Arizona are advancing measures that exempt doctors from medical malpractice suits should they withhold medical information in order to prevent a woman from having an abortion. These bills also shield doctors from malpractice claims if a woman suffers an injury from a pregnancy as a result of information withheld from her to prevent an abortion. Georgia just snuck a liability shield into their 20-week abortion ban. We can expect more to follow.
Proponents of these “wrongful birth” bills argue they are necessary to stem the tide of lawsuits like one in Oregon where parents sued for costs related to the care of their daughter who was born with Down Syndrome. In that case the parents argued that the medical professionals were negligent in conducting the genetic testing and had they known their daughter would be born with a disability they would have had an abortion.
…means that women in states with wrongful birth bills can never be sure the medical information they are receiving is accurate and unbiased, nor can they sue in the event that its wrong or negligent. And that women in states without these bills will have to exercise even more caution and be even greater advocates for their own care as what constitutes good accepted medical practice is no longer easily determinable.
Pregnant women will, in effect be returned to the same legal standing of juveniles or persons under legal guardianship and conservatorship, devoid of the ability to consent to a full course of medical treatment on their own.[emph mine] [Jessica Mason Pieklo/RHRealityCheck/05 Apr 2012]

Yes: Soon [Relayer]

Note: The artwork off the Relayer album is perhaps my favorite cover art of all time, and is used to link to all the Yes songs I post here.
Further note – makes me cry every time I hear it :)

Uploaded by MyMuseMoviesAndMusic on Sep 20, 2010

“The Gates of Delirium” is the first track on Yes’s 1974 album, Relayer. Based on Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace,[1] the song begins with a prelude, which leads into a lengthy instrumental section (beginning at about the 8 minute mark) representing the battle. The final section (entitled “Soon”), released as a single in 1975, is a very gentle, soothing prayer for peace and hope which represents the aftermath of the battle. Before the re-issue of Tales from Topographic Oceans or In a Word: Yes (1969 – ), this was the longest officially released studio recording by the band with almost 22 minutes, taking up the entire first side of the LP. ~ Wikipedia

Soon

Soon oh soon the light
Pass within and soothe this endless night
And wait here for you
Our reason to be here

Soon oh soon the time
All we move to gain will reach and calm
Our heart is open
Our reason to be here

Long ago, set into rhyme

Soon oh soon the light
Ours to shape for all time, ours the right
The sun will lead us
Our reason to be here

Soon oh soon the light
Ours to shape for all time, ours the right

‘Gateway Sexual Activity’: Too funny not to make a title out of it [I read stuff]

Wherein I read things, laugh [or not], and pass them on to you…

muffin500x375

Gateway Sexual Activity – seriously, a real thing in the world (for some at least). Of course, it makes your brain move to ‘gateway drug’, which is equally ridiculous. Wondering when the “Reefer Madness” for the gateway sexual activity film will come out. Is there one already? It seems ridiculous but these nuts are serious, and they’re in charge of your kids!

There’s a lot here from Think Progress. It wasn’t planned that way, but it has worked out that way – enjoy!

Obama: ‘Congress Would Get More Done If There Were More Women’: President Obama spoke at a forum on women and the economy today, following the White House release of a 65-page report (PDF) on the same topic this morning. In a speech that played on the public arguments about a GOP’s “war on women,” the President took the opportunity to argue in front of the largely-female audience that Congress would be more productive if there were more women legislators. “Fewer than 20 percent of the seats in Congress are occupied by women. Is it possible that Congress would get more done if there were more women in congress?” he asked. “I think it’s fair to say: That is almost guaranteed.” [thinkprogress/Annie-Rose Strasser/06 Apr 2012]

Gateway Sexual Activity: But lawmakers worry that encouraging anything that might lead to sex is basically giving students a free pass to have orgies during study hall, hence the new, Super Abstinence Only Education curriculum that expressly prohibits “Promot(ing) any gateway sexual activity or health message that encourages students to experiment with non-coital sexual activity.” Republican Sen. Jack Johnson explained, “‘Abstinence’ means from all of these activities, and we want to promote that. What we do want to communicate to the kids is that the best choice is abstinence.” [jezebel/Erin Gloria Ryan/06 Apr 2012]

Murkowski Becomes Third Republican Senator To Criticize GOP’s War On Women: The men in the Republican Party may not think they’re fighting a “war on women,” but its female senators certainly do. Yesterday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) joined Sens. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Kay Bailey Hutchison in criticizing the GOP’s push for legislation to restrict access to contraception and other basic health care services: “It makes no sense to make this attack on women,” she said at a local Chamber of Commerce luncheon. “If you don’t feel this is an attack, you need to go home and talk to your wife and your daughters.” [thinkprogress/Igor Volsky/06 Apr 2012]

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker Overturns Law Meant To Prevent Pay Discrimination Against Women: Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) quietly signed a bill last night that repeals a law that gave women and others more power to challenge wage discrimination. The Equal Pay Enforcement Act, passed in 2009, gave employers more power to press charges against employers to challenge unfair pay practices, allowing people to plead their case in state courts, instead of the more costly federal court system. [thinkprogress/Alex Seitz-Wald/06 Apr 2012]

Ambitious Governor Manages to Crap on Women’s Rights, Health Care & Sex Ed in a Single Day: Determined to turn Wisconsin into a colder, milk-producing Arizona, Tea Party puppet Walker signed four new bills into law on Thursday, but didn’t announce that they’d been signed until today as we’re headed into a nice mind-erasing weekend. Senate Bill 202 repeals Wisconsin’s equal pay law, effectively making it more difficult and expensive to women who are being discriminated against by their employers to file suit against them. Senate Bill 237 repeals the state’s comprehensive sex education law, replacing it with a curriculum that stresses abstinence over medically accurate information about, uh, sex. Senate Bill 306 further restricts abortion and adds criminal penalties to doctors in the state. And Senate Bill 92 bans private insurance coverage of abortion (government interference in private business? So much for that whole “let businesses be free to do whatever they want so help me God bless America capitalism Adam Smith no regulations” mantra of the Tea Party.) To add insult to injury, Walker didn’t even have the balls to back up the move with a public appearance, or even a public statement on the matter. In fact, no one from his office has commented. [/Erin Gloria Ryan/06 Apr 2012]

New Hampshire Considers ‘Pro-Life’ Bill That Puts Health Care System At Risk: The New Hampshire House recently passed a bill which would prohibit the state from contracting with any organization that performs abortions. While supporters claim that their goal is to stop public funds from paying for abortions, the bill could put the overall health of lower-income women in jeopardy…As Health and Human Services Commissioner Nicholas Toumpas wrote, the bill could cause “dis-enrollment from the Medicaid program potentially resulting in significant disruption to the acute care system.” A group like Planned Parenthood, which claims abortion makes up only three to five percent of the medical services it provides, would not qualify for any government assistance and would not be able to provide the same level of assistance to lower-income women. As Jennifer Frizzell, policy director for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, put it, “For six out of 10 women, we are the primary source of their medical care.” Frizzell claimed that no other group could take their place if their funding was cut. [thinkprogress/06 Apr 2012]

‘Bully’ Rating Lowered To PG-13: The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has lowered its R rating of Bully to PG-13, after coming under pressure to change the grade and allow for the anti-bullying documentary to be seen by larger and younger audiences. The “the intense scene in the film that shows teen Alex Libby being bullied and harassed on a bus” — which initially clinched the R rating — remains intact, but three “uses of the ‘F word’ were removed from other scenes,” the Weinstein Company announced. The film will be released to 55 markets on April 13th with the new rating. Last month, Bully opened in Los Angeles and New York unrated. [thinkprogress/Igor Volsky/06 Apr 2012]

Now, we’re caterpillars, mere bugs, not even livestock. The right wingers aren’t making 100′s upon 100′s of laws against caterpillars, they’re not stripping the rights of caterpillars. They’re stripping the very human rights of more than 1/2 the human population. They’re turning us into livestock, into chattel. And now, we’re just bugs. I’m surprised he didn’t refer to us as cockroaches or some other sort of vermin. Maybe that’s yet to come:

“So our business here is done — principal photography, anyway. It was a challenging schedule we had for this latest installment of RIDDICK – a scant 47 days – but we managed to get what we needed (and more), thanks to a skilled crew and a gifted and willing cast. Spotnitz on the X-Files: The X-Files producer and writer Frank Spotnitz was recently interviewed by Screen Daily about his latest UK series, Hunter (starring Melissa George).  Naturally, he was asked about the possibility of another X-Files film – not so much a follow-up to 2008′s The X-Files: I Want to Believe, but a story that would pick up where The X-Files: Fight the Future left off.  Here is what he had to say…

“There is a very active and relentless fan campaign for a last movie. I do feel like it would be a terrible shame if that didn’t happen. It feels wrong not to give it an ending around the alien colonisation of earth. David [Duchovny] and Gillian [Anderson] feel the same. I have a clear idea of how it would go and I’ve been talking to Chris Carter about it for a long time. I’ll keep banging the drum whenever I meet the Fox guys [the studio holds the sequel rights but was disappointed by the original’s lackluster box office].” [shocktillyoudrop/Ryan Turek/05 Apr 2012]

‘Walking Dead’ filming in Senoia [Georgia] regularly in month of May: Zombies are coming back to Coweta County in May, but if you stay in Senoia, you’ll be safe.
At least that’s the plot of the next season of “The Walking Dead,” which will be filming in Senoia on a regular basis this year.
Mike Riley and Seth Zimmerman with AMC Television attended the Senoia City Council meeting on Monday — telling the council that the film series will be shooting in Senoia throughout 2012 and possibly in 2013, too.
…“Senoia will become a town that is a sanctuary from the zombie apocalypse,” Riley said.
In the series, the town will be a place cordoned off from the zombie infested world outside. “You’re in a safe environment, If you’re outside it, you’re not,” Riley said. He said the town will be governed by “a benevolent dictator.” [times-herald.com/W. Winston Skinner/04 Apr 2012]
