Vin Diesel Confirms Seventh ‘Fast and Furious’ Movie in the Works:

The star of the franchise spoke to THR during a photoshoot for the Rule Breakers 2011 magazine feature.

The sixth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise will be split into two movies.

Vin Diesel, the star and a producer of Universal’s decade-long franchise, said that during the planning process of the new movie, the Fast and Furious creative team, which includes director Justin Lin and screenwriter Chris Morgan, realized that they would need a seventh movie to tell their story. The sixth and seventh are being written simultaneously, he said.

“With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn’t have enough space,” Diesel told THR during the photoshoot for its Rule Breakers 2011 portfolio.

Fast Five moved the franchise from the genre of car-racing adventure to action-adventure heist, while garnering the best reviews in the franchise’s history and grossing an astonishing $626 million worldwide. Apart from reuniting supporting characters from previous movies, it added star power in the form of Dwayne Johnson. A coda at the end of the movie teases the return of a character played by Eva Mendes last seen in 2 Fast 2 Furious as well as the return of Michelle Rodriguez.

“We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages,” Diesel explained. “The studio said, ‘You can’t fit all that story in one damn movie!’”

Diesel did not reveal details on whether the two movies would be two-parters or two standalone movies.

The actor returned to the franchise with the series’ fourth outing after appearing in an end-of-movie cameo in the third movie. The move proved so popular that it paved the way for the return of Diesel and original star Paul Walker.

The movies have proved unexpectedly resilient, something that may have to do with the themes of family and brotherhood, according to the creative team.

“It’s not about the action and the cars, which initially appealed to me when I was 25 years old,” said Walker. “Because if that’s all it was, it would have fallen off a long time ago.”

Juan of the Dead, Stargate Universe, Unknown New Vin Diesel Film and Riddick 3 Art [I read stuff]

Cuban film Juan of the Dead champions the zom-com genre:

Havana is overtaken by zombies (which the local government protests were sent over by the US). What’s left to do now? Start a zombie-killing service. Watch the first trailer for Juan of the Dead.

Alejandro Bruges’ movie seems like a clear nod to past zom-com Shaun of the Dead. But the title (and the fact that the film seems to follow two friends (one lean and one stout) are the only similarities I can see between this film and Simon Pegg’s flick. The trailer looks promising, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for a new spin on the zombie craze.

Still no word about screenings yet, but we’ll keep you posted. Although we suspect it will pop up at a few festivals soon.

Early Details About ‘Fast and the Furious 6? Emerge:

With ‘Fast Five’ already becoming a hit overseas, ‘Fast and the Furious 6? is all but guaranteed to happen. Read on to learn more about what the next film will entail.

Fast Five doesn’t hit U.S. theaters until this Friday, but it’s already cleaning up at the international box office. The new Fast and the Furious film actually managed to outgross Thor in Australia over the weekend, while also getting off to a better start overseas than any of its predecessors. Hence why Fast and the Furious 6 (which is tentatively being referred to as Fast Six) looks to be all but a sure thing at this point.

Series star Vin Diesel and producer Neal H. Moritz have discussed their plans for a sixth Fast and the Furious pic before – and now there are some additional details about the flick, which franchise staple writer Chris Morgan has already begun working on.

Universal chairman Adam Fogelson offered the following bit to Deadline in a recent interview:

“The question putting ‘Fast Five’ and ‘Fast Six’ together for us was: Can we take it out of being a pure car culture movie and into being a true action franchise in the spirit of those great heist films made 10 or 15 years ago?”

Early word on Fast Five is that it does essentially transform the street car racing franchise into a heist series – like that of Ocean’s Eleven, albeit with more explosive vehicle chase sequences and shattering the laws of physics in general (not per se in a bad way, mind you).

Here is the logic behind that move, according to Fogelson:

“So if these movies were still about street racing, there was probably a ceiling on how many people would buy tickets. We wanted to see if we could raise it out of about racing and make car driving ability just a part of the movie, like those great chases in ‘The French Connection’, ‘The Bourne Identity’, ‘The Italian Job’.”

‘Stargate Universe’ Delivers Action and Humor in Season 2.5 Premiere:

‘Deliverance’ is old school space opera with an ‘SGU’ flavor
Stargate Universe makes it’s bittersweet return to Syfy in the US and SPACE Channel in Canada this week and it comes back with a bang. Several bangs in fact.
Like ‘Space,’ the corresponding episode at the start of Season 1.5, ‘Deliverance’ dispenses with much of the re-envisioning that has separated SGU from its predecessors in the franchise. Instead, it delivers in abundance that most populist expression of the space opera genre: the space battle. It’s not Stargate Universe at its best, but it’s an entertaining hour that marks a welcome return for one of the best sci-fi shows on television.[cinemaspy]

Fast and Furious franchise to move to Europe?

Paul Walker can’t say ‘Fast Five’ is the last one; series may head to Europe

Examiner/Andrew Weymes

With series staples, Paul Walker and Vin Diesel, as well as newcomer, Dwayne “I am not the Rock” Johnston, ‘Fast Five’ is driving erratically towards theatres on April 29.

According to Walker, five may not be the magic number, however. In an interview with Screen Rant, he spoke on his feelings towards the series, and where he sees it going should there be a next time.

I don’t even know if I can say this will be the last one,” he began. “The way things are looking and coming together; we are having a good time. There was a period back aways when I thought I’d never come back and revisit. But I’m a little older and a little wiser and it’s been fun to be a part of something that spans ten years. We’re having a good time. It feels more balanced now than ever before.

On the location for a possible sixth film, he said: “We were talking about Europe on this one initially. It was either going to be Europe or Brazil and then it was narrowed down to Brazil and we were going to film a chunk of it in Brazil and then we ended up using Puerto Rico for Brazil. Yeah, it would have to go to Europe.

Walker seems enthusiastic towards the series, as opposed to tagging along out of a sense of obligation. With a higher budget than ever before, ‘Fast Five’ is a bit of a risk, but it could pay off and lead to an even grander finale.

Fast and Furious 6?

Vin Diesel and producer Neal H. Moritz are already planning the direction of a sixth ‘Fast and the Furious’ movie before ‘Fast Five’ even hits theaters.

READ: ‘Fast and the Furious 6? Already in Development: [Jan 13, 2011/Chris Schrader]

If nothing else, The Fast and the Furious series has done an admirable job of keeping things fresh. Rather than finding new ways to tweak the same basic premise, these films have consistently tried to break some new ground.

When Fast Five was officially greenlit last February, Vin Diesel enthusiastically confirmed the announcement on his Facebook page and claimed that a sixth The Fast and the Furious movie was also in the cards. Not surprisingly, the cast and crew’s focus shifted exclusively to production of the fifth installment and there hasn’t been much talk about where the series might go from there.
