Actor John Neville dies at 86:

John Neville, a veteran Canadian actor and stage director who appeared in a multitude of productions, including the hit TV series The X-Files, has died at the age of 86.

Neville, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, died in Toronto Saturday surrounded by family, said a statement from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where Neville worked as an artistic director in the 1980s.

Neville appeared in dozens of movies, television shows and theatre productions during a career that spanned six decades.

…Perhaps the one that gave him the most prominence came in the ’90s when he landed the recurring role of the “The Well-Manicured Man” in the The X-Files.

Anti-Choicers Still Just Want to Control Women’s Sex Lives:

Opposition to abortion today is about the same thing it has always been about: not the humanity and personhood of fetuses, but the humanity and personhood of women.
Historically, abortion—as well as all forms of contraception—was typically seen as an evil not out of concern for the unborn, but rather out of the belief that allowing women to separate sex from child-bearing would lead to a complete collapse of womanly morality, allowing women to have sex willy-nilly for no other reason but pleasure. In other words, contraception and abortion would allow women the same sexual freedom enjoyed by men. There also was a widely accepted view that any woman who wished to avoid motherhood was inherently some kind of deviant; shunning the “natural” role of mother was viewed as a serious gender transgression. And of course, no attempt to maintain gender roles has ever been merely about preserving tradition for the sake of it, but rather about upholding the patriarchy. Social and economic equality are virtually impossible for women whose lives are circumscribed by compulsory motherhood.

When we respond to anti-choicers with our own counter-arguments about the life of the fetus, we have already allowed them to win a large part of the victory simply by allowing them to take the woman and her autonomy out of the equation. For too long, we’ve been willing to fight this battle on the opposition’s turf. As feminists, it’s our responsibility to bring women back into the discussion. We need to reclaim this argument, to focus on the fact that equality is unimaginable in a society where women cannot choose how and when and if to bear children.

I am firmly convinced that at its core, the anti-choice movement has never actually stopped being about the enforcement of traditional gender roles.

Anne Rice picks a fight with Stephenie Meyer: “Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle”:

Over on Anne Rice’s Facebook, the author of Interview with the Vampire has some interesting words about the undead creatures who sparkle. Her first post posed a bit of a loaded question, linking to an article from the University of North Dakota:

And then there is this other really pressing issue: should vampires sparkle? Think before you speak! This is probably the most important issue facing our time!!! (I have a suspicion that Louis, Lestat and Armand will refuse to discuss this. But then you know how contrary and difficult they can be.)…

She later revealed how her beloved characters Lestat and Louie would react to the Twilight creatures dreamed up by Meyer:

Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun. They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town —— anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful.

‘Chronicles of Riddick’ New Movie Shut Down — No Money, Mo’ Problems:
riddick-3-art

Vin Diesel’s comeback as an ass-kicking ex-con from the future is on hold … because production on the new “Chronicles of Riddick” movie has been shut down over some serious cash flow issues.

TMZ spoke with Michel Trudel — the owner of the Montreal studio where the new movie is being shot — who tells us he changed the locks and kicked everyone off the set Wednesday because the production company, One Race Films, has failed to pay up on time.
