Ridley Scott to direct new ‘Blade Runner’ film:

My heart skips a beat, part excitement and part fear. More Bladerunner? Awesome. Unless of course, it’s a disaster. A poke in the eye of one of the greatest movies ever made. But it’s Ridley Scott, and I have some faith.

Nearly 30 years after making the sci-fi cult classic “Blade Runner,” British director Ridley Scott has agreed to direct a new installment, the producers have said.

The new “Blade Runner,” produced by Alcon Entertainment, will not be a remake but rather a follow-up or a prequel to the original. Scott has yet to decide between the two options, the company said in a statement.

“It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction,” said producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.

“We are huge fans of Ridley’s and of the original ‘Blade Runner’.” This is once in a lifetime project for us,” they added.

No casting decisions have been made as of yet, and no release date has been fixed.

Code 46

Code 46:

This was a movie I hadn’t seriously intended to watch. Just one of those things that was “on” while I did something else, and then something funny happened. I stopped doing the “something else”. Not an ‘epic’ movie by any means, but a beautiful movie to watch. In widescreen, the vast, blasted landscapes, couples with empty, futuristic scenes, and the haunting, lyric-free soundtrack? Yep, this one’s a keeper.

Plot: Code 46 is a love story set in an eerily possible near-future where cities are heavily controlled and only accessible through checkpoints. People cannot travel unless they have “papelles,” a special travel insurance. Outside these cities, the desert has taken over and shanty towns are jammed with non-citizens – people without papelles whose lives are severely restricted. William (Robbins) is a family man who works as an insurance investigator.

When his company sends him to another city to solve a case of fake papelles, he meets a woman named Maria (Morton). Although he knows she has been creating the forgeries, he falls completely in love with her. He hides her crime and they have a wild, passionate affair that can only last as long as his papelles: 24 hours. Back home, William is obsessed with the memory of Maria. He tries to see her but is refused the necessary papers to travel. Desperate, he uses one of the fake papelles he kept from his investigation. He eventually tracks her down, only to discover she has been accused of a Code 46 violation. [JoBlo]

Havana is overtaken by zombies (which the local government protests were sent over by the US). What’s left to do now? Start a zombie-killing service. Watch the first trailer for Juan of the Dead.

Alejandro Bruges’ movie seems like a clear nod to past zom-com Shaun of the Dead. But the title (and the fact that the film seems to follow two friends (one lean and one stout) are the only similarities I can see between this film and Simon Pegg’s flick. The trailer looks promising, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for a new spin on the zombie craze.

Still no word about screenings yet, but we’ll keep you posted. Although we suspect it will pop up at a few festivals soon.

Vin Diesel and a warning about the Zombie Apolcalypse [I read stuff]

Vin Diesel is The Machine:

Vin Diesel has lined up a project at MGM called The Machine, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, from Night at the Museum writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, is officially described by MGM as follows:

[Diesel will play] a human-like machine created in secrecy by the Pentagon as the world’s first true ultimate weapon. Twenty years after the project was buried and decommissioned for reasons unknown, The Machine is discovered by a kid who befriends him. When the government learns it has been reactivated, the Machine must protect the family harboring him.

In addition to starring, Diesel is set to the produce the project, as he has with several prior films, including Fast and Furious and Fast Five. He previously teamed with Garant and Lennon (as an actor only) for the 2005 comedy The Pacifier.

Centurion – not so much, sadly

Ads for “The Eagle” are all over the TV up here in Canada and, if it were not for the awesome movie “Centurion” that came out before it and showed how it should be done, maybe I’d be interested in the ‘new’ movie. Sadly, not so much. This has all the makings of another very weak copy of a far better film. Beefcake aplenty I’m sure it will have but story? Not so much, I’m thinking. ‘Salon‘ has this:

“The Eagle” is the second movie within a year to tackle a historical controversy: The mysterious fate of the Ninth Spanish Legion, once commanded by Julius Caesar, which purportedly disappeared somewhere in Britain around the year 117 A.D. (I say “purported” because some historians think it didn’t happen that way at all.) The first one was Neil Marshall’s underappreciated “Centurion,” an ultraviolent mud-and-blood saga starring Michael Fassbender as the commander of a tiny group of Ninth Legion survivors trying to fight their way home through the contradictions of empire. If “Centurion” was almost too obviously a parable about contemporary America’s overseas misadventures, it was held together by forceful performances, visual intensity and sheer narrative drive, none of which are much in evidence in “The Eagle.”
