DiCaprio joins the Finning ban, and Pitch Black Monsters [I read stuff]

Wherein I read things, laugh, and pass them on to you…

Leonardo DiCaprio joins celebrities in support of shark fin ban:

The L.A. Times reports that the “California shark fin ban” bill is receiving support from some high profile celebrities. Leonardo DiCaprio recently signed a letter urging the state Senate to approve the bill. Other celebrities who have shown support for the bill in writing include actress Scarlett Johansson, and NBA player Yao Ming, among others.

The bill (AB376), which would prevent the sale and distribution of shark fins in the state of California, was already approved by the California Assembly and has moved on to the state Senate. According to the L.A. Times, the bill is opposed by Asian Food Trade Association, which claims that the ban would unfairly target Asian eating habits.

Riddick 3 [Screen Rant]

Vin Diesel: Riddick 3 To Begin Shooting This Summer:

As for the story of the film, Riddick will be more reminiscent of Pitch Black in that it’ll take a back-to-basics, more focused approach with Riddick fighting for survival on his own on a desolate and dangerous planet. How does he end up in this situation after becoming the leader of the Necromongers? The Necromonger army turn on him, abandoning him on a planet loaded with dangerous creatures including “trisons” (three-legged bisons) and “mud demons.” There will also be more bounty hunters on his tail so it’ll be interesting to see if Riddick 3 will end the character’s story or allow for the franchise to continue. Here’s the official Riddick 3 plot synopsis:

Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.

Vin Diesel Teases Riddick Details [Coming Soon]

So not only do we get the exquisite treat of an R rated Riddick, but also the possibility of an older, heavier built, Riddick. Oh! Yum! Yes, maybe it’s an odd thing to get excited about but as sexy as a muscular, lithe Riddick is, the more solid build just makes me all a-tingle. This is going to be delicious :p

Vin Diesel has offered some slight hints at what fans can expect from the upcoming Riddick, courtesy of his Facebook fan page.

“[M]y partner on [The Chronicles of Riddick] since the beginning, [David Twohy]… has a new challenge in store,” writes Diesel, “He wants me to have 3 different body looks for this next chapter… There is the DiNorscio type, the Dom type, and the lean Furyan type… but all in the same movie, haha… When it comes to art, we all like a challenge.”

In addition to the “Furyan type” of the previous Twohy films (Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick), Diesel makes reference to his body type in Find Me Guilty and in the Fast and the Furious films.

In addition to the comment, Diesel posted the below artwork which seems to rework a promotional painting from the videogame “The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena” into a teaser for the upcoming film.

Carolyn Fry, Aeryn Sun, River: Most Badass Female Pilots of all time

Carolyn Fry from Pitch Black.

I don’t know how I managed to forget her — I actually had her on my list, and had grabbed this cool pic of her in advance. She manages to bring a dead ship down in spite of incredible odds — and sure, she tries to jettison her passengers. But she’s just being sensible, after all.

Aeryn Sun in Farscape.

She’s a formidable fighter generally, but she’s also a former Peacekeeper pilot, and some of her best moments involve her taking the helm of a ship — like the season two finale, when Crichton is flying away with Scorpius’ mind controlling him, and Aeryn chases after him in her own ship.

River in Serenity.

Okay, so Serenity’s real pilot is, and always will be, Wash. But you can tell, at the end of the movie, that River is gearing up to be a pretty great pilot in her own right. And in the series of movie sequels that unspool in my daydreams from time to time, she’s piloting the ship all the time.
