[W]hen it came to Stargate:Universe, they’d learned the lesson that square-jawed action heroes don’t always equal interesting. Universe is filled with flawed characters, so much so that the entire premise of the show was based around the consequences of having the wrong people in the right place at the right time.

Universe had utterly different themes; cynicism and struggle where the order of the day, problems would not go away once someone had shouted “SCIENCE!” at it and the conflict was almost always internal, rather than some horrid threat from beyond the stars. Which made for great television, but after 10+ years of seeing Stargate Command take on gods and win, I can see why fans were disappointed. They wanted bright heroic romance, not dark struggle.

Which is a pity, because the show was all about triumphing over the impossible.

As if I didn’t have enough reasons not to like conservatives, here’s another one…
Did Conservatives Kill Stargate: Universe?:

Brad Wright has been frequently been associated with the comment that “Conservatives killed Stargate.” In fact, I think this is a misquote. I can’t find anywhere that he specifically said this, but I have found plenty of comments with resentment that people didn’t come over to the new show, and some of ‘em are of the sort that could be interpreted to mean that, whether he did or not.

SO whether he meant it or not (I personally don’t think he did) it’s become a matter of fannon that we pulled the plug on MY favorite franchise.

So did we? Maybe.

…so, did they? I think there was probably quite a few things in SGU that would piss off a conservative: a lesbian character, infidelity, the whole business with stones and sexuality, that “we” aren’t on top of the whole universe anymore, that the military isn’t a perfect happy shiny place where no wrong is done, ever. Those happened to be a lot of the things I liked about this version of Stargate, that nuanced take on humanity. It doesn’t even have to be a “republican party” sort of conservatism, but it certainly was a very conservative take on what was acceptable scifi that I noticed in direct opposition to SGU. A lot of SG1 and SGA fans just were not happy that there was any sort of change in something they considered theirs, so in that sense, yes, conservatives – at least of a science fiction variety – certainly had a part in killing SGU. Thoughts?

Endgame, Shattered, and Stargate Universe:

It’s almost enough to make me lose hope, all these fantastic shows being cancelled. Meanwhile, on the other side of the forest, utter crap reality shows are doing great. It only reaffirms that the vast majority of people are effing morons.

Vancouver TV productions get multiple Gemini nominations

The Vancouver-filmed mystery series Endgame, cancelled this past spring by the Showcase network after one season, earned a Gemini nomination for best dramatic series yesterday, along with several other nominations.

Katharine Isabelle, who played a sympathetic hotel bartender opposite series star Shawn Doyle, was nominated as best featured supporting actress, while guest star David Richmond-Peck was nominated for an Endgame episode. The show was also nominated for best cross-platform project for its online interactive site, and best opening titles.

The also-cancelled and also filmed in Vancouver crime series Shattered, which aired on Global starring Callum Keith Rennie as a traumatized cop, earned Rennie a best lead actor nomination and co-star Camille Sullivan a best lead actress nod. Kari Skogland was nominated for directing an episode.

The Geminis will be handed out at a televised ceremony Sept. 7 on CBC at 5 p.m. PT.

Juan of the Dead, Stargate Universe, Unknown New Vin Diesel Film and Riddick 3 Art [I read stuff]

Cuban film Juan of the Dead champions the zom-com genre:

Havana is overtaken by zombies (which the local government protests were sent over by the US). What’s left to do now? Start a zombie-killing service. Watch the first trailer for Juan of the Dead.

Alejandro Bruges’ movie seems like a clear nod to past zom-com Shaun of the Dead. But the title (and the fact that the film seems to follow two friends (one lean and one stout) are the only similarities I can see between this film and Simon Pegg’s flick. The trailer looks promising, so let’s keep our fingers crossed for a new spin on the zombie craze.

Still no word about screenings yet, but we’ll keep you posted. Although we suspect it will pop up at a few festivals soon.

Idris Elba is set to play one of the leads in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’, a futuristic sci-fi thriller that pits humanity against giant monsters from another world.

Idris Elba will finally graduate from strong supporting player to full-fledged leading man in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Legendary Pictures has been eying the respected (and busy) actor as a potential star of the sci-fi flick for a few weeks; now, a deal between the studio and Elba has been closed.

Epilogue Review [SGU 218]

As the end of a series, Epilogue is a fitting name but it has the feel of a last minute amendment; something changed as the news of the end came, perhaps. As endings go, it’s not a bad one and if the series had come to an end with this episode, there are certainly worse ways it could have gone. But as a name in the Stargate Universe tradition, it strikes a single, final note as opposed to previous titles, where many meanings could be inferred. Continue reading →

Damn! I’ve been loving the Chicago Code, and after losing another cop show I liked -The Good Guys – this really sucks. I’m kind of cringing for Chase now.

THE CHICAGO CODE 1.12 ‘Greylord & Gambat’:

If you’re a fan of television, there’s always going to be a show that you love that gets canceled prematurely. It’s inevitable. Either through low ratings or network mismanagement, some series just don’t take off. This calender year in particular was hard for me, because I already lost “Terriers,” “Stargate Universe” and “Lights Out.” If “The Chicago Code” could have been saved, it would have made my spring.

Because this show is everything I want from a cop drama. It has sharp writing, great characters, compelling stories… “The Chicago Code” really has it all.

But there is one bit of good news. We’re going to get an ending for this series. This week’s episode and next week’s finale are actually going to wrap up the Alderman Gibbons storyline that’s been percolating since episode one.
