David Duchovny: ‘The X-Files made me a better actor’:
YoungAtHeart868David Duchovny has credited starring in The X-Files with helping him become a better actor.

Duchovny, who played Special Agent Mulder on the sci-fi series, commented that he learned a great deal during his nine years on The X-Files.

He explained: “Every day I had to go to work and every day for 14 hours year after year after year. I don’t know if I would’ve made it to this point if I would’ve just gone from movie to movie to movie like a three-month stint here and a three-month stint there.

“It was very good for me and my particular sense of myself or my craft to have to go in every day and do it.”

Actor John Neville dies at 86:

John Neville, a veteran Canadian actor and stage director who appeared in a multitude of productions, including the hit TV series The X-Files, has died at the age of 86.

Neville, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, died in Toronto Saturday surrounded by family, said a statement from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where Neville worked as an artistic director in the 1980s.

Neville appeared in dozens of movies, television shows and theatre productions during a career that spanned six decades.

…Perhaps the one that gave him the most prominence came in the ’90s when he landed the recurring role of the “The Well-Manicured Man” in the The X-Files.

UK’s X-Files now online, Runaway Cow!, and SETI is back! [I read stuff]

The truth is out there: U.K. X-Files put online:

LONDON (Reuters Life!) – Men in black, Mork and Mindy, shining lights in the sky and more than 20 years of other alien visitations and bizarre sightings recorded in Britain’s own “X-Files” were made available online to the public on Thursday.

The nearly 9,000 pages of UFO-related documents, drawings, letters and parliamentary questions recorded by Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) from 1985 to 2007 are the eighth batch of UFO files to be released to the National Archives (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ufos).

The files are available to view for free online for one month and include the tale of one woman and her daughter from the leafy London neighborhood of East Dulwich who said they saw lights in a worm shape, wriggling around in the sky before being visited by two men in space suits and dark glasses early one chilly January morning in 2003.

Wolverine, X-Files, and Alien [I read stuff]

Wolverine: “It Gets Better”:

One year ago, in the wake of a number of gay teen suicides, Dan Savage created a video with the aim to tell those being harassed and seeing no way out that “it gets better”.

It became a meme with over ten thousand videos echoeing Savage’s initial appeal from everyone from Barack Obama to Colin Farrell to Woody the Cowboy, with Google turning a selection into an advert for its social networking.

This week, the X-Men got involved, in the latest issue of Generation Hope by Phonogram team Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie.

It’s an allegory that sees a young man’s latent mutant genes emerging, only to find his situation mocked, seeing only one way out. However it’s not a complete substitution, we also discover that Generation Hope member Kenji Uedo’s father committed suicide when his mother found him with another man.

At which point Wolverine echoes Dan Savage’s campaign.

X-Files [116]: E.B.E.

X-Files season 1 EBE is one of the more beautifully pieced together episodes of this season. In watching I was struck by the notion that it’s not the existence of aliens that is the central theme of this episode, or even of the X Files themselves. It’s the existence, the fact, of not one government lie but of all of them. That even in Mulder’s belief, the government is perpetrating another lie.

The “Majestic” documents, referenced briefly here, were less about aliens and UFO’s than they were about supporting a structure of a government cover up. In creating a framework whereby UFO hunters and those that claimed to see them were silenced by shadowy government agents, the belief in aliens is strengthened, while any that would expose the lie are painted as lunatics. X-Files [115]: Young at Heart

“An agent died because I screwed up.”

X-Files season 1 There was a time when a young agent Mulder played by the rules, fresh out of the academy at 28 years old. It got a man killed and let a monster go free, something Mulder has been haunted by. It goes a long way towards explaining why Mulder plays fast and loose with those same rules.

Within his own limits.

His career’s still smoking: [19 Jan 2011]Actor-director William Davis was always a creature of the stage, until his career started smoking in the 1990s. The craggy-faced player became a pop-culture fixture with his role as the smoking man for nine years in The X-Files TV series and movie. The role took him to Los Angeles when the show moved production south, and led to steady work playing similar men of mystery and malice in TV ( Smallville, Supernatural) and movies ( The Messengers). “I died in X-Files three times,” Davis says during a break in directing rehearsals for the new play Waste. “Since X-Files, I’ve died 14 times in different movies. They just like killing me off. I think I’m still in jail on Smallville.” [theprovince] Continue reading
